WELDING PROCESS IMPROVEMENT

microJoining Solutions (mJS) recognizes that our clients need to improve their welding processes NOW and do not have time to redesign their parts to make the parts easy to weld and to perform a complete re-validation of their re-designed product.  mJS has extensive experience improving poor yield welding processes without redesigning parts geometry or changing part materials.

Typical Client Welding Problems:

  • Weak tensile or peel strength

  • Poor fatigue or life cycles

  • Excessive weld splash

  • Pin holes and voids

  • Burned surfaces

  • Open welds during environmental testing

microJoining Solutions Problem Solving Approach:

microJoining Solutions uses the Design of Experiment (DoE) process, coupled with years of "hands on" high and low volume production experience to solve the client’s welding problem by:

  • Defining “weld quality”

  • Identifying the controllable input factors

  • Defining the output responses in relation to the desired weld quality

  • Optimizing the welding parameters

  • Conducting confirmation runs to establish Cpk or Six-sigma metrics

  • Setting weld process limits

NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

microJoining Solutions (mJS) assists our clients by designing "weldability" into the product.  Most welding mistakes are created in the design stage.  Key “weldability components include:

  • Selecting the proper base and plating materials

  • Employing part geometry that balances the thermal loading between parts

mJS has developed a special expertise in welding automotive components and sensors, medical devices, and solar cell assemblies.  Selected clients include Boston Scientific, Bosch, Cochlear Ltd., Guidant, Northrop Grumman, Saint Jude Medical, Special Devices, and Soliant Energy.

mJS holds three patents in micro-joining equipment technology and is the co-inventor of the non-contact "FlashSoldering" process for joining fine insulated magnet wires to a variety of surface mount components and connectors.

TRAINING

microJoining Solutions employs a combination of theoretical and "hands on" training.  Our goal is to make our client engineers and technicians "mini-experts" in laser or resistance welding.  Our courses include:

·              Fundamentals of Laser Welding

·              Fundamentals of Resistance Welding

·              Design of Experiment (DoE) Fundamentals for Laser Welding

·              Design of Experiment (DoE) Fundamentals for Resistance Welding

PROCESS DOCUMENTATION

Six-sigma orientated manufacturers know that proper welding documentation is necessary to ensure weld quality consistency and be able to reproduce the welding process anywhere on the globe.  microJoining Solutions is very familiar with what "proper welding process documentation" means for those manufacturers required to meet Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP), ISO, or FDA medical device requirements.

microJoining Solutions can help our clients write and implement the required documentation.  As a minimum, the Six-sigma manufacturer must create the following control documents:

  • Equipment Installation Qualification (IQ)

  • Equipment Operation Qualification (OQ)

  • Welding Process Qualification (PQ)

  • Product Performance Qualification (PPQ)

  • Welding Process Validation (PV)
